What You Missed at the March 5, 2015 Member Meeting with Storage Business Owners Alliance

This was a great evening to beat the (long) winter blues and just get out to be with others in our industry. Our location was great – plenty of parking and a nice, bright meeting room made Duffy’s Tavern in Kennebunk a good choice. There was something on the menu for everyone. After a brief business meeting and talk of our future conference at Hollywood Casino on April 16 & 17, MeSSA welcomed Philip Ross, Director of Inside Sales for the Storage Business Owners Alliance (the SBOA) as our speaker for the evening. The Storage Business Owners Alliance offers discounted programs and services from industry-leading vendors in the self storage industry. They provide substantial discounts on operating expenses that are already used in the everyday operations of our facilities. Phil presented information on how SBOA works and how it would work for us. We all like to save money. It is free to be a member of SBOA, so that makes the deals even better. The member attendees and 3 guests had an enjoyable evening of networking and information.

For more information on SBOA’s specific discounted programs and services offered, or SBOA Tenant Insurance, check out their website at See you in Bangor!

What You Missed at the MeSSA Member Meeting – January 15, 2015 in Yarmouth

When you read this review of our last meeting, you will know that you missed an informative and fun time at the Muddy Rudder Restaurant. As usual, this is one of our best member meetings during the year. We do a little business and have some fun, too. The food and service were excellent (thank you, Gerry), and the room was bright and inviting. We had a full house, but could have squeezed you in if you had come. Lots of catching up and making friendly acquaintances took place during our meet and greet time. While waiting for our delicious dinners, our panel of experts spoke on varied topics from raising rental rates to energy efficient lighting, with a few amusing stories in between. After dining, Pete Bouchard, Chief Meteorologist for WHDH Channel 7, Boston, shared his career experience and read some of his “fan mail” to us. We only wish we were so popular. Thank you for entertaining us. The BOD met beforehand at 3:00 and, with coffee in hand, fine tuned plans for our future events. You can find our future events by clicking the “Events” tab at the top of the website. See you next time.

Thank you to our panel of experts Donna Theall, E-Z Self Storage, Ellsworth, Don Plourde, Pondwood Self Storage, Winslow, Julie Bouthillette, Wells Storage Solutions, Wells, and Matt Hynes, U-Haul of Maine and New Hampshire.

SSA Promotes Timothy J. Dietz to Chief Operating Officer

Alexandria, VA – Self Storage Association (SSA) President & CEO Michael T.Scanlon, Jr., today announced that Sr. VP of Government Relations Timothy J. Dietz, CAE, has been promoted to the position of chief operating officer (COO) effective immediately. Scanlon said Dietz will take on additional executive responsibilities while continuing to manage advocacy duties for the SSA and its 5,500 members throughout 2015.

Scanlon, who previously announced his intent to retire this September, said the organizational adjustments will ensure continuity of administrative coordination during the transition process. Dietz joined the organization in 2004 and has filled various executive functions, most recently overseeing lobbying activities nationwide that have significantly improved the business arena for the 48,000-plus property real estate sector.

“I have had the opportunity to work with Tim Dietz for many years, and as I look toward retirement this fall, I know for sure that he is prepared to take on additional responsibilities that will take the SSA to the next level,” said Scanlon. “As COO, Tim will become more involved in the Association’s decision-making process and interactions with the board of directors. He has done great work in managing our communications activities – including the development of SSA Globe magazine into the largest-circulation publication in the self storage industry – and leading our many lobbying successes in states throughout the country.”

Prior to joining SSA, Dietz held government relations and communications roles for various nationally-focused organizations, including chief lobbyist for MACTEC, Inc., a Colorado-based environmental remediation government contractor; and management of investor relations for Alexandria, Virginia-based Metrocall, Inc. In 2011 the George Mason University graduate completed his Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation through ASAE, the Center for Association Leadership, which is based in Washington, D.C.

“Over the past decade, Mike Scanlon has overseen tremendous progress in the development of the national Self Storage Association (SSA), an organization that represents a still-young yet robust real estate segment,” said Dietz. “Under his leadership, this organization has consistently provided improved benefits and important representation for self storage owner/operators. I look forward to working closely with Mike and the entire SSA team as we continue to provide our members with a superb association experience.”
